The crew of the Condor Express experienced dense fog all morning as they took a straight course from Santa Barbara harbor to The Cave (Santa Cruz Island). Skies then cleared enough for good looks at 8+ humpback whales and 1500 long-beaked common dolphins.
Common dolphins were seen in the mist on our southward course to The Cave, but no estimates could be approximated due to the fog which was down to the deck. Upon arriving at The Cave, Captain Dave (rhymes with cave) took the boat inside the first chamber of this famous, world’s longest, sea cave. He followed this up with one of his great discourses about Santa Cruz Island, its geological origins, indigenous peoples, natural resources, and modern environmental issues.
After the tour the boat moved towards the western end of the island as skies cleared. Soon an area several miles long was discovered full of whales, dolphins and active sea birds. A few of the whales were socializing which included vocalizations, pectoral fin slapping, tail throws, and some rolling around upside down, etc. Numerous additional whale spouts were seen in the distance.
The trip home, under continued blue skies, featured even more dolphins.
