Humpback Whales put on a Show on the North Side of the Channel

2015 05-19 SB Channel

Captain Dave headed out into the Santa Barbara Channel in search of #whales and #dolphins today. Near More Mesa he spotted the first humpback whale spouts. There were whales stretched all the way up to Campus Point, and 8 were watched closely today. Much of the action occurred within hot spots where anchovies were being concentrated and devoured by at least 1,500 long-beaked common dolphins and seabirds of all kinds.   California sea lions were there in abundance too.   In the feeding zone, one surface lunge episode was watched as two humpbacks attacked a school of fish near the Condor Express.   There were a couple of breaches in the distance, and a few tail slaps…at one point a whale on the right side of the boat and another on the left slapped their tails, one after the other. Conditions were better than expected and the wind didn’t start up until about 130pm when we turned and rode it back home to the harbor.  A few ocean sunfish (Mola mola) were in the area too.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store. Bob Perry Condor Express
