Humpbacks, a gray whale and heaps of dolphins.

2020 02-14 SB Channel

Captain Dave and the crew report excellent conditions with calm seas and blue skies on this happy Valentine’s Day! Sightings included 2000 long-beaked common dolphins, 3 humpback whale‘s, and 1 Pacific gray whale. The first pod of dolphins located the Condor Express about 4 miles out from Santa Barbara Harbor. They were feeding actively in crystal clear blue water. Pelicans and other predatory birds were busy diving and Captain Dave was able to put the boat right up alongside some of the massive schools of anchovies that were just below the surface. This bait also attracted three humpback whales. The first two consisted of a huge female and a smaller juvenile. Not only were these two very friendly but they were also actively surface lunge-feeding on some of those aforementioned bait balls. A bit later, a third whale join the action. Dave then took the boat over to Santa Cruz Island where a tour of the northern seacliffs included a penetration of the world-famous Painted Cave. Upon leaving the island, we almost immediately found a southbound migrating gray whale and followed it for quite a while with great looks. On the way home, there were more scattered dolphin pods that were busy riding our bow, stern, and side waves. You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
