2022 02-06 SB Channel
Captain Devin and the crew found sunny skies and calm seas in our neck of the Channel again today. Sightings included 5 gray whales, 2 humpback whales, 100 long-beaked common dolphins and 100 offshore bottlenose dolphins. The crew retrieved one deadly balloon from the ocean surface.
Breaching in the distance turned out to be a pair of humpback whales. The whales had a nice, regular breathing cycle and showed their flukes. This tranquil pattern was interrupted a few times by random, spontaneous tail throwing.
Cruising along the beautiful north coast of Santa Cruz Island, our friend Dino found spouts in the distance which put us on to 5 southbound migrating gray whales mixed with about 100 offshore bottlenose dolphins. The gray whales were quite close to the island and the dolphins spent most of their time riding our bow.
