Today’s sightings: 5 humpback whales and 2500 long-beaked common dolphins. Captain Dave and his crew reported ideal sea conditions and sunny skies for the entire excursion. The ship’s track ran from Santa Barbara Harbor to Santa Rosa Island, and large dolphin pods were found throughout. Humpbacks are on the rise and thousands of dolphins are in our zone too.
The first dolphin pod was found north of The Lanes and consisted of 200 or so mothers and calves…it was entirely a nursery pod. This was a fantastic start for the trip, and, as mentioned above, the dolphins kept locating the Condor Express all day.
South of The Lanes, and off Santa Rosa Island, the feeding hot spot with whales was located. The whales appeared to be feeding sub-surface along with many hundreds of dolphins. Loads of California sea lions and hundreds of sea birds joined in the feeding frenzy.
