Large numbers of mammals today including Scarlet and her latest calf!

2021 10-02 SB Channel

The dense fog, on the deck, became a high stratus layer with adequate lateral visibility by the time Captain Dave and the crew reached the hot spot. Speaking of hot: closely watched species included: 12+ humpback whales, 3000 long- beaked common dolphins and 200 California sea lions.

All the above sightings took place at one place: south of The Lanes adjacent to Santa Rosa Island. Seas were calm all day. All of the mammals and sea birds were busy feeding, and most of the northern anchovy schools were subsurface. The whales would come together for a short time, move away spreading themselves across a mile of water, only to come back together again. Food distribution determined the location of everything.

A special sighting within this hot spot was a mother humpback with her calf, plus an escort. It was none other than our old pal “Scarlet.” She has proven to be very boat friendly year after year and today was no exception. Everyone had wonderful close-up looks at this unique animal. It makes chills run up your spine…
