Light rain, glassy seas and ample cetacean wildlife

2020 03-13 SB Coast

Light rain, drizzle and cloudy skies, alongside very calm seas, set the stage for some wonderful wildlife sightings, including: 2 Pacific gray whales, 250 long-beaked common dolphins and 2 humpback whales.

As Captain Dave and his crew enjoyed the glassy coastal waters and light rain, the Condor Express went west and located our first whales near UCSB. It was a tight pack of 3 adults northbound and we saw great tail flukes. Some light socialization was also observed with rolling around, etc. We left this trio up at Coal Oil Point and headed offshore.

After a few nice miles on a southeasterly track a pod of dolphins that was spread out of over a mile or so, located the boat. Each group in the pod took a short break from feeding on northern anchovies to greet our whale watchers and ride our waves. After a short while two humpback whales emerged on the scene and indications were the pair was feeding sub-surface. Numerous sea birds were also in this hotspot region.
