The trip started our smooth, but a moderate breeze and surface bump filled-in as we moved offshore. Skies were blue. Sightings for the day included: 1400 long-beaked common dolphins, 1 humpback whale and 60 California sea lions. The crew picked up one, floating, deflated, Mylar balloon.
About 5 miles out we crossed paths with a large pod of dolphins that was spread out of several miles…not too many in one place, but they went on and on. A bit later we found and had a long sighting session with a single humpback. It appeared to be feeding sub-surface and had short, 6-minute, dive times.
Later we found ourselves about 6 miles off Hope Ranch where we saw a large birdnado. The surface bait ball here also attracted another group of dolphins and a tight mob of several dozen sea lions. Great to witness all this action!
We hugged the coast on the way home with hopes of possibly seeing an early southbound gray whale…but no such luck.
