Lots of gray whales interacting with the dolphins today
Although there was a decent sized westerly swell rolling down the Santa Barbara Channel today, Captain Eric steered a course for the Santa Cruz Channel (also called “the gap” between Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Island) and found wonderful whale watching conditions with plenty to see. He reports closely observing 5 out of at least a dozen gray whales in the “gap” and they were not only cooperative but once again got into some interspecies interactions with the 30 or so Risso’s dolphins that seem to be hanging around the same region. And to top off the cetacean species diversity, there were some 500 or more long beaked common dolphins that played with the Condor Express. The southbound gray whale migration is still going pretty darned strong.
