Lots of grays and humpbacks, plus a Minke whale.

Skies were sunny and blue all day. The morning trip experienced very calm seas with no wind; the afternoon was also calm but a light breeze picked up. Total sightings for the day included: 7 humpback whales, 5 gray whales, and 1 Minke whale.

The 9 AM trip had a trifecta. Between the beach and Platform Charlie we watched 1 shy humpback whale, a single Minke whale patrolling the area, while a lone gray whale came through on its way west. Wow! I cannot recall having all three species in one place at the same time. We moved offshore.

When we were about 8 miles south of The Harbor we encountered a group of 4 more westbound migrating gray whales. They had a very cooperative long surface times and short dive times. There was some minor socializing going on between them. To the southwest about a mile we found 2 more humpback whales that were moving west in slow travel mode.

On the noon trip there was a mother humpback whale with her calf less than 2 miles outside The Harbor entrance. Unfortunately, being so close to The Harbor, the duo became surrounded by boats of all sizes. We chose to move away and head back out to deep water.

Out at the edge of The Lanes we encountered 2 adult humpback whales. They became very friendly, and came by the boat on three different occasions before we had to head home.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
