Lots of humpbacks and plenty of surface lunge feeding.

2021 05-01 SB Channel

Skies were sunny for both trips, and there was not much wind. The first trip left the dock at 9a, the second at 12n. Sightings for the day included: 6+ humpback whales and 400 California sea lions.

During the morning trip we located a mother humpback with her calf about 4 miles offshore. There were lots of surface anchovy bait balls although this pair was not observed surface feeding.

The noon action was 8 miles out and started off with a mother-calf pair. The calf was very active. It breached a few times, rolled around and did a “head stand” so it’s little tail was in the air waving around while the whale was vertical in the water. Two separate adults were also watched in this zone. All of the whales on this 12n trip were surface lunge feeding, and the vast majority of the lunges were vertical.

Sea lions were present with most of the bait balls and definitely took part in the feeding when the noon humpbacks were lunging.
