Marvelous masses

2020 11-15 SB Channel

Captain Colton and the crew of the Condor Express ran south to The Lanes and found a tremendous hotspot that resulted in one of the most epic days we’ve had this week. Skies were sunny and bright. Seas were glassy with only a little bump left over from yesterday‘s wind. Sightings today included: 10+ humpback whales, 4000 long-beaked common dolphins, and 75 offshore bottlenose dolphins.

The action began about 7 miles offshore when a large pod of offshore bottlenose dolphins located the boat. It turned out to be a nursery pod (with loads of calves). They were very boat friendly and the encounter was enhanced by the super clear water.

Continuing south to The Lanes, a single humpback whale was mixed in with over 2000 dolphins. All were feeling subsurface. Soon the whale moved west while the dolphins moved east. We opted to follow the whale. We found a second megapod of about 2000 dolphins in an area where there were so many humpback whales we only had time to watch nine, but many more spouts were all around the zone.

The first of the 9 whales consisted of two adults and a juvenile. The juvenile put on quite a show. It breached, threw its tail, and did some spy-hopping…all very close to the boat.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store
