Captain Dave and the crew of the Condor express found a heavy marine layer and gray skies all day. The ocean surface was flat and calm. Sightings were over the top: 14+ humpback whales, 2500 long-beaked at common dolphins.
The action took place 8 miles south of UCSB wear a large group of humpback whales and dolphins had aggregated. There were at least five whales to start things off here. Throughout the day the whales and dolphins mixed together, and there were several very close approaches by whales. Of course the dolphins, too, always love to visit us on the boat.
Around us, and a little away from the boat, we saw lobtailing, and some surface lunge-feeding. Otherwise there were lots of good tail flukes to watch. More were found away from the boat where we could not get to them in time.
