Once again the various meteorological and oceanographic conditions all lined up to generate fantastic sea conditions and wonderful wildlife sightings. (Translation: it was really calm and sunny) Captain Tasha and her crew located 1 big fin whale, 3 giant blue whales and 200 long-beaked common dolphins.
Near the eastern end of beautiful Santa Cruz Island a single fin whale was the friendliest whale we’ve watched this week. It was not just the short 4 minute down times and long surface intervals. The beast spent a lot of quality time cruising right next to the Condor Express which made its fan club on board thrilled.
Further toward the east end a single giant blue whale was seen and soon after two more popped up. The classic “blue streak” was seen many times as the bright sun reflected off their silvery bodies through the blue water…some say this is why whalers called them blue whales. There was quite a bit of tail fluking going on too.
Later, closer to the harbor on the way home, a nice sized herd of dolphins located the Condor Express and rode along with us affording fantastic looks to all.
