Ten whales were closely watched today, 4 Minke whales and 6+ humpbacks. Additionally, the long-beaked common dolphins were non-stop and Captain Dave estimated at least 5000 individuals were encountered. Skies had a high marine layer and seas were glassy calm all day.
Common dolphins came to us just 2 miles offshore and were around in huge numbers all day. At this 2-mile point we also interacted with 4 Minke whales. There were 2 single, shy whales and a friendly pair which has been coming by the Condor Express quite closely on and off for the past few weeks.
Continuing on a southwesterly heading, accompanied by dolphins…as previously mentioned, we located all of our whales in the separation zone between the northbound and southbound commercial shipping lanes. All were actively fluking-up and no doubt feeding subsurface. It was good to see so many nice tails!
