Monster humpback sightings, hundreds of sea lions and bottlenose too!

2019 04-21 SB Coast

Captain Dave and his crew ran two trips today one at nine the other at noon. There was a little bit of wind in the morning and it picked up to make a fresh breeze during the afternoon trip. Otherwise, there was wildlife everywhere. Sightings included 10+ humpback whales, 15 coastal bottlenose dolphins, and at least 200 California sea lions On the morning trip we headed up the coast and soon encountered a good-size group of bottlenose dolphins. The dolphins came by the boat and then headed inside the dense beach kelp beds where we could not follow them. Moving offshore about 4 miles, we ran into a hotspot for humpback whales. Although we only watched 4 animals closely, there were plenty more in the area. One of the leviathans went crazy and breached at least 10 times very close to the boat. This phenomenal NatGeo experience sent chills up many human spines.

On the afternoon trip Captain Dave returned to the humpback whale hotspot. We closely watched six of these beasts and again there were plenty more spouts in the region. One of the animals breached in the distance. On this excursion, the whales were mixed in with at least four groups of 50 sea lions. I assume they were all gorging themselves on the same big northern anchovy bait ball swimming below the surface.
