Nice weather for humpbacks and dolphins

2018 07-25 SB Channel East

Sightings for today included 3 humpback whales, 1000 long-beaked common dolphins, and 1 Minke whale. Captain Tasha ran across the Santa Barbara Channel and good marine life areas down near the eastern end of beautiful Santa Cruz Island.  The weather was nice. There was a little bit of the west swell but fortunately the wind never filled in.

The first sighting was a single humpback whale surrounded by several large pods of dolphins with about 100 animals each pod. This first dolphin was a little bit shy but quite soon we located a second humpback which was much more cooperative and threw up its tail flukes very close to the boat.

Many large big balls full of northern anchovies were seen on the surface today some of them were being attacked by California sea lions.  There must have been plenty of bait below the surface because the whales did not surface feed.
