Nine Gray Whales Today
With a moderate breeze and some medium seas building across the western Santa Barbara Channel today, the Condor Express ran east along the face of Santa Cruz Island to find some relief. As the boat tucked way up inside Chinese Harbor, the first whales were encountered, and this sighting included two very very small gray whales in the mix. Captain Eric reports that these tiny whales were very dark, almost black, in body color and had little to no Cryptolepas rhachianecti barnacles that settle on the whales while they are in the Mexican lagoons. As the Condor Express moved out of Chinese Harbor, several more pods of adult gray whales were closely watched. By the end of the trip, as we motored northwest back towards Santa Barbara Harbor, the boat had tallied-up a whopping total of nine gray whales on the trip today. We are certainly in the thick of the southbound migration now.
As a reminder, we are not running Monday, our regular maintenance day, but will start regular open whale watch trips again on Tuesday.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store. Best regards, Bob Perry Condor Express
