Happy Summer Solstice Day! It was surely a typical summer day in the Channel. Captain Dave and his crew took the Condor Express across the entire Channel, to the southwest and back. Sightings today included: 1 humpback whale, 1 fin whale, 4 giant blue whales and 1500 long-beaked common dolphins.
The only humpback of the excursion was sighted very close to Santa Barbara Harbor…only 4 miles out! What a treat. It was a friendly whale and, as a bonus, fluked up regularly. Soon after this encounter, a megapod of dolphins located the boat. As usual, they surfed our bow, side and stern waves. Even more dolphins were seen as we continued on our southerly course in the general direction of Prisoner’s Harbor, Santa Cruz Island.
In The Lanes we came across our first giant blue. It had a typical 10 minute dive time and, with this wonderful sunshine, was a gorgeous sight…blue on blue. Soon thereafter, just south of The Lanes, the additional 3 giant blues were observed along with a single, large fin whale. One of the blue whales fluked-up a few times…a treasured moment during blue whale encounters.
