Remarkable encounter with an adorable humpback youngster.

2021 10-13 SB Channel

There was no fog or stratus of any kind today. Seas had a moderate swell and light chop from a breeze blowing from the northwest. Sightings included 3 humpback whales and 2500 long-beaked common dolphins.

Scattered dolphins located the Condor Express starting just 6 miles offshore. This area also included a large group of at least 1500 animals. We had great looks at these marvelous cetaceans before continuing south.

West of The Buoy more scattered pods of dolphins were watched and 1 juvenile humpback whale was mixed in the fray. This turned out to be an especially friendly youngster that spent over an hour with us. It did a lot of rolling around as well as lolly-gagging on the surface with its head underwater at the posterior 2/3rds of its body floating on top. It swam off a few hundred meters once or twice, only to immediately come back to the mother ship for more adoration from its fan club.

On the way home we had large dolphin herds as well as a pair of whales. The whales seemed to be actively feeding subsurface for which we saw lots of classic humpback tail flukes.
