Santa Rosa Island heats up with humpbacks and dolphins

2019 09-22 SB Channel

Captain Colton and his crew ran out to a hot region north of Santa Rosa Island, near The Lanes. Sightings included: 7+ humpback whales and 3000+ long-beaked common dolphins.

The seas were flat. There was no wind. Bright sunny skies kept us warm and made spotting wildlife a dream. The fun began as we approached The Lanes near the mouth of the Santa Cruz Channel. Here we were discovered by a megapod of at least 2000 common dolphins. They were all around the Condor Express and went on for miles in all directions. The number estimate may be low, but we err on the side of caution. Later we’d encounter more and more dolphins everywhere in the southern Channel.

In a previously mentioned area, off  beautiful Santa Rosa Island and south of The Lanes, “Osprey Eyes,” our deckhand and pro wildlife spotter saw spouts several miles away. Upon arriving at the scene we found 3 pairs of humpback whales in the same area.  4 were juveniles, and one of the 2 adults spent some time with friendly/close passes by the boat.  We spent quality time and had excellent looks. Additional spouts were seen in the distance, and one more was watched closely as we moved a bit south.
