Image: gray whales with Platform Holly to the west
2023 03-19 SB Coast
Captain Devin and the crew ran a single successful whale watching trip that left the harbor at 9a. There was a southeast wind that brough lots of rain showers and a small mixed swell. Sightings for the trip were wonderful: 7+ Pacific gray whales.
Not far off the Isla Vista coast we spotted numerous small pods of gray whales around the zone. We got set up on a trio of adults that were fairly focused on their northbound migration, but did put up wonderful tail flukes for all to see.
The next closest pod was near Platform Holly where we watched 4 adults, again with good flukes. There were some pauses for socializing and rolling around.
You probably already got the image of more whales in the vicinity.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
