Sparkling day with humpbacks and plenty of dolphins.

2019 10-23 SB Channel

We experienced absolutely stunning weather and sea conditions in the Channel today. Skies were bright blue and winds ranged from zero to just about 10 knots. It was just enough to make the water sparkly but not rough. We ran across the Channel in search of whales and dolphins and found plenty of life. There were 1000 long-beaked common dolphins, 1000 short-beaked common dolphins and 2 humpback whales. Two nice-sized herds of long-beaked common dolphins were found crossing the Channel. We had great looks and, coincidentally, there were no calves in these groups, which is pretty uncommon. Out in the Santa Cruz Passage, between Santa Cruz and Santa Rosa Island, and just south of The Lanes, a large and wide-spread herd of highly animated short-beaked common dolphins were located. We moved a little further west to find 2 very nice humpback whales. This pair stayed together moving northwest and they were “all business”. They had moderate dive times and short surface times. They did fluke up quite a bit, which in the bright sun and gorgeous blue water, was a fantastic site. You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
