“Camello” was back in the Santa Barbara Channel again today (June 27, 2016). This blue whale was last seen by the Condor Express and photographed by yours truly on July 1, 2015. By the way, July 1, 2016 is this Friday, so it has been darned close to exactly a year. Here is what I wrote last year about this whale, thanks to the feedback I received from colleagues at Cetal Fauna:
“A giant blue whale with a deformed back and a story. The whale called “Camello” is a longtime acquaintance of our friends at Cascadia Research Collective. It was first reported from the Sea of Cortez in April of 1988, and has since been seen in the Gulf of the Farallones, Fort Bragg, and Monterey Bay, with the previous most recent sighting being in the Santa Barbara Channel six years ago. It was spotted off Redondo Beach in Santa Monica Bay on May 22, 2015.”
