Captain Dave and the crew of the Condor Express found overcast skies in the morning, with fairly calm seas and abundant wildlife. Sightings included 8+ humpback whales, 2000 long-beaked common dolphins and 200 California sea lions. Skies cleared and it was sunny in the afternoon.
The wildlife sightings started with several large pods of dolphins locating the boat southwest of Platform Habitat. It was a magical encounter as most of these dolphin-human interactions are. We ran west from this location and had many more herds of dolphins all day long.
West of the dolphin zone, and a few miles off UCSB, an area rich with whales and dolphins, plus all the sea lions and sea birds we have come to expect this month, was discovered. There were 8 closely-watched whales with many more in the near distance. At times the whales moved together to form groups, only to then disperse individually. One large whale from the group breached twice, slapped its chin, and breached a third time…all fairly close to the Condor Express. Later two whales from the group did quite a bit of socializing. This included rolling around near each other and a bit of vocalizing.
