Summer conditions and great wildlife sightings

2019 08-18 SB Channel

Great conditions with calm seas and sunny skies set the stage for a unique an interesting day of wildlife sightings. Totals for the day include: 3+ humpback whales (live), 2000 common dolphins (both short- and long-beaked were seen today), 1 deceased humpback calf, and 1 white shark.

Not far south of Santa Barbara Harbor we re-located a dead humpback whale calf that we previously saw earlier this week. For those of you that have been following the story, the carcass drifted much closer to shore and was being “recycled” by a large, 12-foot great white shark. After some photo ops and looks, Captain Colton headed further offshore in search of actual live animals.

Northwest of the western end of beautiful Santa Cruz Island our keen-eyed deckhand, Devin, spotted a hot feeding spot with loads of dolphins and 3 humpback whales. There were additional spouts in the area as well. Two of the whales made some friendly passes by the Condor Express, and one large adult breached relatively close to the boat. Dolphins were around all day and several of the pods were tentatively identified by Colton as being short-beaked common dolphins. Most, per usual, were the long-beaked species.
