Summer-like conditions in the Channel

2019 04-30 SB Coast

A single trip left the docks at noon today with Captain Dave at the helm. Skies are overcast most of the day in the harbor but offshore a mile or two it was bright sun. Seas were very flat and calm. Total sightings for the trip included 50 long-beaked common dolphins, 28 California sea lions and one humpback whale.

We ran offshore and a mile or two out from Arroyo Burro a small group of long-beaked common dolphins located us and we had great looks in crystal clear blue water. There were also three California sea lions with them. About a half an hour later our deckhand Colton put the gaff on a large red and white Mylar balloon which turned out to be quite a nice specimen. It’s always great to rid the ocean of these horrible pests. Just 10 minutes after the balloon we stopped to look at a good size gathering of California sea lions. We looked at them, and they looked at us. By the way there were numerous small flocks of 50 to 100 sooty shearwaters resting on the glassy surface today. Our final sighting was of a large humpback whale which looked fantastic in the bright sun with mirror glass water. We followed it around for at least a half an hour and had great looks.
