Totals for the day: 4 gray whales and 50 long-beaked common dolphin. Only one 2½-hour coastal excursion with ideal sunny weather and good sea conditions. Here is the story:
12 noon Just outside Santa Barbara harbor we found our first gray whale. It was a bit shy, but we did get some looks. We moved east and ended up outside the oil rigs with a nice pod of 50 common dolphins. There were a few calves in the group which is always great to see. Later we found a second, very shy, gray whale which was hard to track. On the way back we ran west to explore the coastal waters and found a pair of gray whales near Hendry’s. These were much more cooperative and fun to watch.
