It was a sunny day today and this generated a light breeze and some chop. Nevertheless, Captain Dave and his crew located 1 giant blue whale, 1 fin whale and 250 long-beaked common dolphins. It was great to have a bright sunny day with so much life.
South of The Lanes a single giant blue whale was located and had down times that varied between 6 and 10 minutes. The up times were good and it was gorgeous to see the tall spout of this giant being whipped high by the breeze.
Later we encountered a single fin whale, a smaller individual, which had a nice habit of traveling just beneath the surface for several breaths before making its terminal dive. The clear water and bright sun made it possible to track the fin whale and stay with it even with some chop on the surface.
Finally, just outside Santa Barbara Harbor, on the way home, a feeding pod of dolphins was located. Pelicans were crashing and other sea birds, too, signaled the presence of bait in the water. Upside down dolphins were seen all around as they hunted these small fish on a sunny day.
