2019 08-09 SB Channel
The Condor Express closely watched 1000 short-beaked common dolphins, 1000 long-beaked common dolphins, and 5 humpback whales. Skies started out with patchy fog, but were mostly sunny all day for a change.
Things got under way near Habitat where small patches of long-beaked common dolphins located the boat and would continue watching us all day long. After moving south east of Habitat, more dolphins and a single juvenile whale were located and watched.
A bit later Captain Dave and the crew had moved the boat to a position that was north of The Lanes and down near the mouth of Anacapa Passage. Here a frolicking, leaping and tail-walking mega pod of short-beaked common dolphins found us and everyone went wild…almost as wild as the dolphins themselves. Two additional whales were also found in this area. One of them breached at a moderate distance from the boat.
On the way back to the harbor, the last 2 whales of the trip were watched. It was Scarlet and a “friend.” We were southwest of Habitat at the time. One of the whales was doing a lot of above-water activities in the distance. On the scene Scarlet “mugged” us for quite a while. She was also very vocal during this friendly visit. It was particularly special to have this wonderful encounter with an old pal.
