There was a gray high stratus layer until we reached the sunny islands and glassy seas were present all day long. Captain Dave and his crew bisected the Channel and put up some amazing numbers today: 10 humpback whales and 2500 long-beaked common dolphins.
The action began with both humpbacks and dolphins about 7 miles south of Goleta. All the whales were busy feeding today accompanied by an entourage of dolphins and voracious sea birds. There were 3 whales sighted at first and we added another as we neared The Lanes. The mirror sea surface conditions enhanced the observations.
Dave provided his legendary commentary as he took our passengers on a visit to Santa Cruz Island as the sun broke through. Conditions were ideal to put the boat inside the first chamber of the world-famous Painted Cave.
On the homeward leg of the Channel tour, in addition to constant dolphin pods, we watched a pair of whales. As we approached the mainland shoreline, about 6 miles out from Ledbetter Beach, a trio of large adult whales was watched. One of the beasts breached as Captain Dave, who seems to have the ability to mind-meld with whales, directed everyone’s attention to the coming leap. How does he do it?
Additional whales were seen in the distance as we neared the Harbor area, one of which wasn’t too far away to see it lob its massive tail.
