2019 06-01 SB Channel
On an ocean surface that was glassy smooth, the Condor Express ran across the Channel, visited Santa Cruz Island, and found wildlife everywhere! Totals for the day included: 3000 long-beaked common dolphins, 12+ humpback whales and 1 Mako shark.
We were not yet 4 miles out from Santa Barbara Harbor when multiple groups of dolphins, with hundreds on animals each, located the boat and rode our bow, side and stern waves. Several humpback whales were scattered all the way out to The Lanes, and we went from one to the other like stepping stones.
At beautiful Santa Cruz Island we cruised along the majestic sea cliffs and went inside the first chamber of the world famous Painted Cave.
On the way home we encountered many more whales as we located a giant ocean hot spot feeding frenzy. Seabirds, sea lions and whales all gorged themselves on huge aggregations of northern anchovy bait balls.
Finally, just a few miles out from home, a large Mako shark was located and we had some incredible moments with this predator as it cruised along the ever-glassy surface.
