There was a stratus deck for most of the day with light winds and a slight wind chop on the water. Sightings included 1 humpback whale and 5000 long-beaked common dolphins.
Captain Colton and his team started dolphin observations with small sized pods only 4 mile from the harbor. Pods got larger and more numerous and the day progressed. Widely scattered sub-surface anchovy schools remained the primary feeding target as has been the case all summer.
After turning south, Colton had to patiently wait for 4 large container cargo ships heading west in the northbound shipping lanes that exit LA/Long Beach Harbor. Soon thereafter, and still in The Lanes, we moved slowly towards a distant spout but never found the whale. But another large adult whale surface much closer to the boat and threw its mighty tail a few times. This whale proceeded to go into a travelling mode for a while then stopped and repeated a few tail-throws.
All the way home lots of dolphin pods found us and rode our bow, side and stern waves.
