2019 09-04 SB Channel
It was another sunny day with calm seas and a slight breeze in the Santa Barbara Channel. Sightings included 2000 long-beaked common dolphins and 2 humpback whales. Our route took us offshore south of UCSB and then further out to The Lanes.
Dolphins were all around, all day long. There was a large congregation of them at our first stop, off UCSB, and we had fantastic looks on a wonderfully sunny day. Later we would experience many hundreds of dolphins everywhere, including our second stop.
Whales were very active in The Lanes today. Both of them were large adult animals and actively feeding sub-surface. There was a lot of very fast swimming (both on the surface and below) as they kept up with the quick dolphins. Good tail flukes were seen on every dive as all of us (whales and people) covered a lot of territory.
At one point both whales stopped to do some kelping. (Example shown in today’s attached photo). This involved some serious rolling around in the seaweeds and generally them seeming to enjoy the time.
