Two trips left the Santa Barbara Landing docks today, 9a and 12n. Skies were sunny all morning, but got cloudy (with glassy seas) later. On the way home from the afternoon trip the wind suddenly increased and kicked up a little spray. Total sightings for the day included 3 gray whales and 2000 common dolphins.

The morning excursion headed southeast past Platform Habitat. There were numerous large (BS-5) birdnados along the way. The bait that attracted birds also brought us 3 big pods of common dolphins. Wonderful looks were had by all.

On the afternoon adventure we moved further south, past Habitat, and ended up in The Lanes with great island views. Adjacent to Chinese Harbor a research scientist on board (Christina) spotted a trio of northbound gray whales using top secret infra-red technology. (You did not hear this from me). The whales were in travel mode and had a regular breathing cycle for easy viewing. (See today’s photo for an example). On the way home we passed by a 4th gray whale at speed but due to time constraints we did not stop.

The crew removed 3 deflated, floating Mylar balloons from the ocean surface.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
