Captains Dave and Eddy were both on board today. Two trips left the dock, a morning trip which was public, and an afternoon trip which was private. Weather and sea conditions remained outstanding for both trips. Skies were clear and sunny, the ocean surface was for the most part glassy, and we had little or no wind. We saw two different individual gray whales, one on each trip.
On the morning trip, we located one very large adult gray whale south of The Rigs. We stayed with it for two breathing cycles, during which time it popped up close to the boat twice. After the second terminal dive, the whale disappeared and we no longer found it. Interesting, that so late in the season, it was a southbound whale.
On the afternoon adventure we found a different adult gray whale about 2 miles off the Summerland coast. This was a northbound whale. It was far more cooperative than the morning whale, and stayed with us for an hour. Wonderful looks were had by all including several very good tail flukings.
You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
