Very mellow summer seas yields relaxed and logging whales and thousands of dolphins

Fingers of dense fog on the water, less than a mile across, interrupted a blue bird day full of mirror glass and sunny conditions. Sightings were phenomenal: 10 humpback whales and 5000 long-beaked common dolphins.

Captain Devin reports that all the action occurred within a couple of mile radius centered just 7 miles off the beach. Hot spots were packed with large pods of dolphins, sea birds and…humpback whales! Most of the whales were slowly traveling &| feeding sub-surface, or logging near the surface (see today’s photo for an example).

After moving from whale to whale and getting great looks, we moved towards the harbor and, just outside the Kelp Farm, watched lots more dolphins and an additional day of logging whales.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
