Wild whales, weather and dolphins.

2019 12-13 SB Channel

There were some wild weather changes in the Channel today which I’ll tell you about later. Meanwhile the wildlife sightings were good and included 20 coastal bottlenose dolphins and 2 humpback whales.

As we left the coast, and the cruise ship anchored there, behind us it was a nice calm sunny day. Pretty quickly we encountered a large pod of bottlenose dolphins. The animals were friendly, and curious, and there were numerous calves in the mix. It was fun to watch them in the bright sunshine. We moved offshore. Not long after the dolphin encounter we entered into a wall of dense fog. We were navigating by radar and you could hardly see the bow of the boat. This continued and we finally broke out of it in The Lanes. As fate would have it, The Lanes presented yet another weather change. The dense fog disappeared and it became quite breezy.

Captain Dave put the wind on our stern to keep the ride nice and calm. Before long 2 large humpback whale adults were located. They were moving east at a steady pace and put up their massive tail fluke several times. Not only was that great to see but made for some wonderful selfies as well. On the way back home the dense fog bank had moved all the way to the beach. Again we used radar to find the breakwater in the harbor and to try to work our way around the big cruise ship and it’s several shore boats (which apparently did not have radar).
