Thousands of dolphins and 1 very active humpback whale.

A single coastal whale watch excursion left the SEA Landing docks in Santa Barbara Harbor at 9am. We headed southwest with nice sea conditions and located 1 humpback whale, 3000 long-beaked common dolphins and a single, shy Minke whale.

The lone humpback was spotted from several miles away due to its surface aerial activities.  While on the scene we observed breaching, head-standing, nearly vertical lob-tailing, upside down lob-tailing, pectoral slapping and a few mini-chin slaps. This activity period was still going on as we headed away from the location.

Common dolphins were widely distributed in groups ranging in size from about 100 individuals to many hundreds of individuals. It is always great to watch these small cetaceans ride our bow, side and stern waves.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
