A humpback spy hop.

2018 09-09 SB Channel

Captain Tasha and the crew of the Condor Express found overcast skies that later burned-off to bright sunshine. Lots of marine life was spread across the Santa Barbara Channel today. Totals included: 2000 long-beaked common dolphins, 3 humpback whales, and 500 California sea lions.

The first sighting included a pot of about 200 dolphins near the mid channel buoy. There was a large ground swell from the west that the dolphins were riding, so we follow along. Soon we encountered one humpback whale that was rolling around on the surface. It did a very slow and long spy hop near the boat. This was a special sight for sure.

Moving further along with the big swell we found 1500 additional dolphins along with hundreds of sea lions and two big humpback whales. There were more whales in the distance that we did not have time to watch, as we had ended up near the middle of Santa Rosa Island.

The trip home passed through many additional pods of dolphins.

You never know what Mother Nature has in store.
